This post is going to be part of a series of multiple blog posts, where I simply talk about certain fashion brands/ designers and what they’re about. I’m using it as a way to educate myself more about fashion brands as well as sharing what I’ve learn’t with other people who want to know more about them too!

Burberry is a British luxury fashion brand, created by Thomas Burberry.
Thomas Burberry, coincidentally, established Burberry in my hometown Basingstoke, in 1856. His initial concept for the brand came from his belief that clothing should be designed to protect people from the British weather (which evidently, is shit).
However, since 1856, the brand has clearly expanded that initial concept and turned the company into a luxury brand which now makes clothing items from the well- known classic trench coats, to other ready-to-wear outerwear, fashion accessories, fragrances, sunglasses, and cosmetics. Below is Riccardo Tisci who is currently Burberry’s head designer (replaced Christopher Bailey in 2018).

The Brand’s Aesthetic
So, if you have heard of Burberry, then you likely know the two key signifiers of the brand: the classic’ Trench Coat’, and their trademark pattern ‘The Burberry Check’:

Over the years, Burberry have had a variety of collections, and runways showcasing them, all of which are ‘ready to wear’, unlike some brands whose runway looks are perceived as less practical/ wearable maybe for the average everyday person. Burberry seems to show how you can look ‘fashion and runway ready’ in daily life- with a great balance of practicality and style.
Collections
Here are a few of their collections and some of my favourite pieces from them.
Fall 2019 Ready-to-Wear- TEMPEST
This collection by Riccardo Tisci, plays on a viewpoint of British street-style through 90’s music and club culture, but also with a bourgeoisie twist for some of the looks.
Fall 2018 Ready-to-Wear– TIME
This collection by Christopher Bailey has been said to be “the most autobiographical and heartfelt collection of his career” through the symbolic revisiting of a dive club where he experienced his fashion awakening. The looks serve British street culture in the 80’s and 90’s.
Spring 2015 Ready-to-Wear- THE BIRDS AND THE BEES
This collection, another from Christopher Bailey, invokes an idealised vision of British summertime- a feeling of freedom and “running through meadows”. For this collection, I personally prefer the men’s looks over the women’s.
